How FMCSA MOTUS Setup Works
The authorized company official completes identity and business verification before the existing USDOT record can be claimed and linked.
Create the User Profile
Sign in through Login.gov and create the individual profile that the authorized company official will use to access MOTUS.
Complete Identity Verification
Complete the required identity-proofing process. The official may be asked for a government-issued photo ID and facial verification.
Verify or Claim the Company
Provide the legal business name, EIN, physical address, and proof that the official is authorized to act for the company.
Link the USDOT Number
Your transportation advisor helps with the next step of connecting the existing USDOT record and preparing the MCS-150 filing.
Is “Link a USDOT Number” still greyed out?
If you closed an incorrectly created Transportation Service Provider account but the “Link a USDOT Number” option remains unavailable, contact USDOT Compliance Services at (202) 660-1434.

When Is Your MCS-150 Update Due?
Filing schedule: Each motor carrier or intermodal equipment provider must file the appropriate form before it begins operations and every 24 months according to the USDOT-number schedule.
Determine Your Filing Year
- If the next-to-last digit of the USDOT Number is odd, file in every odd-numbered calendar year.
- If the next-to-last digit is even, file in every even-numbered calendar year.
- The final USDOT digit determines the filing month.

States That Require a USDOT Number
Apart from federal regulations, some states require intrastate commercial motor vehicle registrants to obtain a USDOT Number. Select a state to visit its responsible motor-carrier agency.
For intrastate motor carrier registration, check with your responsible state agency.
MCS-150 Questions
Is an update required when nothing has changed?
Yes. Covered USDOT registrants must confirm or update their information on the applicable biennial schedule even when the record has not changed.
What information can be updated?
Common updates include company addresses, contact information, operation type, cargo classifications, vehicle counts, driver counts, and other carrier-record information.
Who should complete the MOTUS verification?
The verification should be completed by an authorized company official who can document their relationship to the business.
Does creating a MOTUS profile link my USDOT number?
No. User-profile creation and company-record linking are separate steps. We provide guidance through both processes when applicable.
Will I receive confirmation after filing?
Yes. The service includes filing confirmation and receipt support after the MCS-150 update is submitted.
